Description

We see our mission as the never-ending collecting, storing, and disseminating information of all kinds relating to the history of Montgomery County, Alabama.

To help with the restoration of our headquarters, the 1837 Figh-Pickett (Barnes School) House, we hope that you will consider any of various house elements as a tribute or memorial. A brass plaque will be placed on the element naming the donor and the person in whose memory or honor the element was given. If interested, call us at (334) 264-1837, or E-mail us at info@montgomeryhistorical.com. We still have a number of windows, doors, stairs, etc. available as memorials.

Meetings

We hold at least two membership meetings a year with excellent speakers. Members receive our quarterly newsletter, The Herald, which is filled with stories of local history.

Your membership in the Montgomery County Historical Society will help us with the tasks of restoring the 1837 Figh-Pickett House and in starting and maintaining a collection of historical papers, books, and photographs for research purposes there. Your membership, after the restoration is complete, will help us achieve our goal of establishing a museum of Montgomery City and County history.

Mission

We see our mission as the never-ending collecting, storing, and disseminating information of all kinds relating to the history of Montgomery County, Alabama.

History

The Montgomery County Historical Society was formed in 1992 for the purpose of collecting, preserving, and disseminating information regarding the history of Montgomery County, Alabama, and for the purpose of founding a museum in which to display artifacts and papers relative to our history. Since the Alabama Department of Archives and History can no longer perform this function for us, the success of this organization has become imperative to the preservation of our local history. Since its inception, the society has established a quarterly newsletter, now in its eighth yearof publication. We have also sponsored outstanding speakers for our own two or three membership meetings annually, as well as jointly with Landmarks Foundation. We have acquired the historic Figh-Pickett House, which later served as Barnes School for Boys, moved it to a safe site, installed our offices in the building, and commenced its restoration. This famous old house will eventually become a repository for Montgomery County Records, a reasearch facility, and a Montgomery City and County Museum.

Publications

The Montgomery County Historical Society's newsletter, The Herald, is published quarterly in January, April, July, and October.
