Please note new phone #. We now have a land line at our museum. We are not there every day during off season, but we check for messages every week or two.
First large hotel and stagecoach stop in the area, built in 1862. Houses pioneer artifacts of Bremer County.
The museum building was originally the Daily House Hotel, built in 1862 from native lumber and locally fired brick. It was later renamed the Waverly House Hotel.
The BCHS aims to preserve and promote interest in, and knowledge of, the links between Bremer County's past, its present and the future. The society is all about tracing the trail of people, events and artifacts that brought us--literally and figuratively--to where we are today.
The Bremer County Historical Society is much more than collections of old "stuff." We are a clearing house for information about old and largely forgotten villages and post offices; cemeteries and genealogy; notable citizens of days past, including town and county founders and other early settlers; economic history of the county and how things have changed; railroads; the Waverly airbase; history of individual towns within the county; and topics too numerous to list.
We are also a source of speakers for meetings or special occasions. We encourage teachers to bring their classes to the museum or we can come to school. Getting kids interested in local history is a key to maintaining the link between past and present. Look for the museum to become much more involved in the schools in the next few years.
Board of Directors
The museum is owned, operated and maintained by the Bremer County Historical Society, a nonprofit organization comprised of volunteers from around Bremer County, Iowa.
We make sure we maintain close ties with local libraries and other museums, so if we don't have or know something, we know where to get help. The BCHS: one-stop shopping for all your historical needs!
