Description

Dedicated to interpreting aviation, particularly as related to New York State, the Museum offers visitors a variety of enjoyable and educational experiences, including interpretive exhibits, a spectacular collection of restored aircraft, the state's largest aviation library, as well as education programs.

Restoration Center

The Restoration Center houses aircraft in various stages of restoration. In addition, the museum boasts the most extensive aviation library in the state, with a wealth of publications, aviation art, and aviation records.

VOLUNTEERISM

Volunteers, a vital asset of the museum, are almost solely responsible for education, restoration of aircraft, exhibit repair, mailing, office work, and maintenance of grounds and buildings. A group of volunteers also works in the library to catalog, maintain and preserve the collection.

Mission

TO INTERPRET AVIATION, PARTICULARLY THAT RELATED TO NEW YORK STATE, WITH EXHIBITS AND PROGRAMS WHICH EDUCATE, ENTERTAIN AND EXCITE THE PUBLIC.

History

Begun in 1984, the museum is located in historic building, including a General Electric hangar and office complex where jet engines were designed and tested. NOAA also had an installation at the site.

The museum has grown from a single floor of mostly models and books to a two gallery display area, a indoor exhibit of aircraft particular to NY aviation and an airpark of 16 military aircraft, including a F-14 Tomcat, a RVAH Vigilante, a MiG 17 and a MiG 21, a TS-2a Tracker, two Huey-type helicopters and many others.

Artifact Collections

Aircraft, clothing, models, medals, patches, dioramas, photographs, propellers, engines, radios, Link trainer, Antarctic exhibit (partner with NYANG 109th Squadron), large model of Akagi aircraft carrier used in movie, "Tora, Tora, Tora", interactive displays of flight characteristics, ammunition, weapons, M-42 Duster (anti-aircraft tank), replica of fuselage of Amelia Earhart's plane used in movie and much more.

Research Collections

An extensive and exhaustive research center has media in all forms relating to flight throughout its history and in particular to New York State.

Educational Programs

Under development. Check website for educational opportunities. Learning and discovery are encouraged with programs for all ages. Programs include rocket-building for children, aviation history classes, and guest speakers, just to name a few. The Museum is chartered as an educational facility and received the "Partners in Education" award from the NY State Council for the Social Studies. Off-site programs are offered to supplement school science programs and as after-school enrichment. Aviation Adventure programs are held during school vacation weeks and in the summer. Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles' program (a first flight experience) is offered in conjunction with EAA Chapter 852. ESAM sponsors AIM High a program for inner-city and at-risk youth, which provides special activities. Birthday Celebrations offer activities in rocketry, gliders, and airplane construction.
