Description

The Historical Society of Rockland County's facilities provide 14,000 sq. ft. of space divided into approximately 50% for public use, 34% for collections storage and 16% for administration. All public areas are wheelchair accessible. The buildings are located on 7 acres of landscaped grounds. HSRC owns 4 structures on 4 acres, and the town of Clarkstown loans an additional 3 acres for parking, nature trails, picnicking and as a buffer between the historic farm site and its immediate suburban community.

The History Center Museum, completed in 1978, is a 7,200 sq. ft. fireproof (brick, concrete, steel) facility. The main level contains a lobby/reception area, exhibition galleries (2,170 sq. ft.), research library/archive (450 sq. ft.) administration offices (900 sq. ft.), museum shop (80 sq. ft.), and public restrooms. The lower level (ground level entry due to sloping landscape) contains Woodland Indian Exhibits (400 sq. ft.), collections storage (2,200 sq. ft.), meeting/education room (750 sq. ft.) and lobby/public (handicapped) restrooms.

The Blauvelt House, is a 2 story-vernacular brick farmhouse, c. 1832 with an added wing (1930's) comprising 2,500 sq. ft. It includes 6 period rooms in the 1,200 sq. ft. first floor historic area and a kitchen on the first floor 20th c. wing. The second floor contains a caretaker's apt. (1,200 sq. ft.) and staff office (100 sq. ft.).

The Historic Barn (unheated) is of post and beam construction with an Anglo-Dutch floor plan. Its main section, c. 1865, has 1,500 sq. ft. floor space used for exhibits of farm equipment and demonstrations. The barn's wing, c. 1900, contains 2,000 sq. ft. of floor space currently used for non-collections storage. A cinder block tool shed (160 sq. ft.) houses maintenance equipment and a workshop. The Carriage House (unheated) c. 1865 is 800 sq. ft. and is of post and beam construction and used for general storage. Activities are allocated appropriately to the building spaces: thematic exhibits, lectures, meetings, workshops, and research in the museum; period exhibits, crafts, cooking demonstrations, and tours in the House, Barn and Carriage House. The main museum building is HVAC controlled, with filters and temp/humidity controls throughout the building (exhibition, collections storage, library and office area). The Blauvelt House is temperature controlled with humidity controls (manual-dehumidifiers/humidifiers) which are monitored weekly. Temperature and relative humidity is maintained in the appropriate levels for each area. Objects are rotated, stored and exhibited in adequate or optimum conditions.
