Description

Discover something new every time you visit

The Art & History Museums – Maitland is a premier Central Florida cultural destination and community gathering place. We offer 5 museums within a mile of one another, and invite you to spend the day with us and enjoy all that we have to offer. From professional artists working in their studios to hands on 19th century woodworking, our museums offer unparalleled opportunities for enrichment and inspiration. Our two campuses include a 1937 artists’ colony with Aztec and Mayan architectural influences, a Victorian house museum, a working antique tool museum, an interactive telephone museum, and a museum that celebrates the history of Maitland. There truly is something for everyone and each experience is well worth the trip.

Mission

We engage the public by educating, collecting, preserving, interpreting, exhibiting, and promoting art and history reflective of the American experience inspired by Maitland's heritage and the legacy of André Smith's Research Studio. Through our multidisciplinary collections, unique architectural environment, and inspirational programming, we stimulate thought, spark the imagination, enrich the spirit, and foster appreciation in art, historical research, and preservation.

Artifact Collections
Discover Andre Smith

America’s first official WWI artist created an art colony in 1937 in Maitland, Florida, originally called The Research Studio. His 21-year tenure at the art center included friendships with Zora Neale Hurston, Mary Curtis Bok, and Annie Russell, while also serving as a location for invited artists to create their own work.

Maitland on the Move

The Maitland Historical Museum’s permanent exhibition Maitland on the Move features highlights of Maitland through the years in a timeline format. Visitors can learn about the Timucuan Indians, examine the days of the early citrus groves, check out milestones in the City’s history, celebrate the Maitland Little League, and more! Exhibit sponsored by Progress Energy and Mercantile Bank.

The Telephone Museum

The Telephone Museum's permanent exhibit takes visitors on a tour of communications technology. Try your hand at the working switching station and then take a look at how phones have changed through history. This exciting collection features the story of the Winter Park Telephone Company founded in Maitland by Carl Galloway in 1910.

Waterhouse Residence Museum

This historic house museum reflects the life of a middle class Victorian family during the early days of the city of Maitland. The home was originally built by Maitland resident and carpenter William Waterhouse in 1884. Visit and learn about the Waterhouse family and the early days of Maitland and Central Florida.

Carpentry Shop Museum

Built in 1883 as the working shop of carpenter and home builder William H. Waterhouse, the Carpentry Shop Museum now houses a permanent exhibit of nineteenth century and early twentieth century tools. This museum offers hands-on opportunities as well!
