The Museum of Arts and Sciences, Volusia County's largest cultural institution, is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, and features 100,000 square feet of arts, science, history, children's and nature exhibits and regularly changing programs.

Mission

The museum exhibits and promotes programs for understanding and appreciation of art, Florida history and the natural and social sciences; renders educational and cultural services to the community through collection, preservation, conservation, and interpretation of objects. For this purpose, the museum houses and maintain collections, exhibits, a reference library, research and teaching facilities in the arts, sciences and history in Daytona Beach, Port Orange, and St. Augustine, Florida.

History

Artifact Collections

The Museum houses and maintains a documented collection of objects that are preserved and managed for study, exhibition, programming and education. In total, these collections are referred to as the permanent collections and include objects from the disciplines of fine art including sculpture, painting and graphic arts; decorative art including glass, silver, furniture, ceramics, and clocks; history including general Americana, Florida, French, and Cuban; ethnology including African, pre-Columbian, Cuban, Floridian and Afro-American; biology including natural history, conchology, astronomy; paleontology of Florida; and archeology. The Museum also maintains 10 historic buildings in two national register districts and maintains two interpreted nature preserves.

Educational Programs

The Museum of Arts and Sciences serves as a lifelong learning resource for our diverse local, regional and national population, working to provide programs and exhibitions that accommodate all audiences and learning styles. Educational opportunities in the current year include: 15 public outreach events; 17 school-based outreach events; 32 pre-K classes and activities; 34 home-school classes and activities (7-12 yr olds); 18 after school programs; 7 summer camp sessions with 38 distinct classes for pre-K to 12 yr olds; 10 specialty programs for adults/families; 11 history lectures/presentations; 13 science lectures/presentations; daily gallery walks / collections tours with curatorial staff and docents.

MOAS publishes a quarterly magazine with a distribution of approximately 7,000 households and businesses. Recently published books include: "Reflections: Paintings of Florida from 1865-1965."
