Description

The Ukrainian Museum acquires, preserves, and exhibits articles of artistic or historic significance to the rich cultural heritage of Ukrainian Americans; its collections include thousands of items of folk art, fine art, and archival material. At its founding in 1976 by the Ukrainian National Women?s League of America, the Museum was hailed as one of the finest achievements of Americans of Ukrainian descent. Since then, and particularly since its move in 2005 to a new, state-of-the-art building in Manhattan?s vibrant East Village, it has become known as one of the most interesting and dynamic smaller museums in New York City. Each year, the Museum organizes several exhibitions, publishes bilingual (English/Ukrainian) catalogues, and presents a wide range of public and educational programs, including concerts, films, lectures, courses, workshops, and special events.

Artifact Collections

The Museum?s holdings are grouped into three main categories: fine art, folk art, archival. Fine Art -- collections of works by Nikifor, Vasyl and Hryhorovych Krychevsky; works by Alexander Archipenko, Alexis Gritchenko, Oleksa Novakivsky, Jacques Hnizdovsky, and others). Folk Art -- attire from various regions of Ukraine, ritual cloths (rushnyky) and kilims, and other textiles; ceramics, metalwork, and decorative carved wood objects from the 19th and 20th centuries; an impressive collection of pysanky, or Ukrainian Easter eggs. Archival --photographs, documents, personal correspondence of noted individuals, playbills, posters, flyers, maps, stamps, currency, etc. -- all documenting the life, history, and cultural legacy of the Ukrainian people.

Educational Programs
Courses

Folk art and fine art courses and workshops for adults, children, families, and schools, in addition to guided tours make up the core educational program. Most courses and workshops require pre-registration. Tour groups of 10 or more may register in advance for guided excursions of current exhibitions. The Museum also has a film program of documentary and narrative films. Other events include book presentations, lectures, concerts, and conferences. See the current brochures for educational offerings, and the website calendar for other events.
