Tarentum, Pennsylvania
Description

Glass, Steel, and Aluminum industries were the economic growth engines for the A-K river valley towns that grew in the shadow of Pittsburgh, attracting entrepreneurs, immigrant labor, and union organizers. You are invited to join in the efforts of the Allegheny-Kiski Valley Historical Society to preserve and celebrate the unique history of this region.
The Museum; Take a look at the A-K Heritage Museum, a beautiful 1931 Art Deco Building in Tarentum - the cobalt blue glass walls in the ballroom - the murals that tell the story of the home front during WWII - the aluminum collection from the world's first production plant for aluminum - the Tarentum Glass collection - and much more.

One current project is identifying the Tarentum and Freeport scenes on 500 glass negatives from 1906 by George Burtner.

Mission

The Allegheny-Kiski Valley Historical Society is a non-profit, permanent institution whose primary mission is interpreting, preserving, and celebrating our cultural, industrial, and ethnic heritage of the Allegheny and Kiskiminetas river valleys in southwestern Pennsylvania, a region embracing the surrounding areas from Harmar Township north to Freeport, and east to Apollo. The Society is committed to accomplishing this mission through the following objectives: 1. Acquiring, preserving, and professionally exhibiting historically relevant material that illustrates the history of the region; 2. Developing and facilitating cooperative partnerships among organizations with a similar mission; 3. Providing educational and outreach opportunities for the public; and 4. Serving as a catalyst for the private and public preservation, rehabilitation and/or adaptive re-use of historic sites.
