Description

Our Historical Society is collecting the history of the 14 present day communities of the original Mifflin Township of 1788. We are looking for genealogies of the early families, photographs and written histories. We try to preserve the local histories of municipalities and churches by collecting anniversary booklets. Through contributions, we are collecting memorabilia, photographs and books pertaining to the 14 communities that we serve: Baldwin, Clairton, Dravosburg, Duquesne, Hays, Homestead, Jefferson Hills, Lincoln Place, Munhall, Pleasant Hills, West Elizabeth, West Homestead, West Mifflin, and Whitaker.

History

The local historical society was first founded in 1916 by members of the Outlook Club. The organization was loosely based and met sporatically. In 1980, the Centennial year for Homestead, a group of history devotees met to form a historical society. This non-profit was chartered as a 501(c)(3) in Pennsylvania. In June of 2001, the recently organized Mifflin Township Historical Society merged with the Homestead Historical Society to expand and continue the mission of the Homestead Historical Society and bring an enthusiasm about history to a broader base of communities in the Steel Valley.

Artifact Collections

Our collection of artifacts is small, but is growing through the contributions of members and friends. We have some everyday household items and tools used in the 1920-1960 period. There are a few military items, campaign buttons and advertising. Obituaries, Newspapers, photos, artifacts make up our collections.

Research Collections

The Mifflin Township Historical Society has been working on establishing a computer database of photographs of the local communities. Some images date to the 1890s. We have also started a collection of books on the history of Pennsylvania and Western Pennsylvania in particular. Through contributions of members and friends, we are archiving yearbooks for the local schools.

Educational Programs

The Mifflin Township Historical Society has presented local history programs to various groups via PowerPoint presentations, lectures and discussions. Lectures include the early history of the counties in Western Pennsylvania, the founding of Mifflin Township in 1788 and the formation of the 14 present day communities through the mid 1940s. We can provide a genealogy for some of the early settlers to this area. Our outreach programs can be coordinated through the President of MTHSociety. We accept an honorarium and reimbursement for travel expenses.
