Description

The Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum, located in the Historic 1916 Courthouse in Downtown West Palm Beach, is maintained and operated by the Historical Society of Palm Beach County.

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County was established in 1937 to further an understanding and appreciation of Palm Beach County history by collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting cultural resources for the enrichment of current and future generations.

Mission

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to collect, preserve and share the rich history and cultural heritage of Palm Beach County.

The Society meets our mission through three historically-focused program initiatives: our archival collection, the Richard & Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum, and our community and educational programming.

Our large archival collection includes over two million photographs, maps, periodicals, and more. Through this collection, we maintain an active research facility and document influential people and events. The Johnson History Museum, the county-wide history museum we operate, enriches the lives of our students, residents, and visitors by making local history accessible and interesting. The Museum opened in 2008 within the Historic 1916 Courthouse in Downtown West Palm Beach. Finally, the Society shares local history through multiple educational and community initiatives, including events like Scarecrow Festival, programs in schools like Florida History tabloids and Traveling Trunks, and www.pbchistoryonline.org.

History

The HSPBC engages 35,000+ students/visitors annually in meaningful educational programming at the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum and in public elementary/middle schools. The museum offers dynamic exhibits chronicling the people/places that are uniquely PBC and provide research/reading resources to the public. They offer free access to a sample of the collection and attract diverse audiences with their variety.

After moving from home to home for decades, in 2008, the Society opened the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum to showcase our extraordinary collection to the public. Visitors to the Museum discover more about the people and events that have shaped this exciting County, including notable figures such as Henry Morrison Flagler, Addison Mizner, the Barefoot Mailmen and their accomplishments.

Permanent Exhibitions

The People Gallery – A tribute to approximately 100 individuals and families who have contributed to the growth of Palm Beach County. The Place Gallery – Models and photographs exploring Palm Beach County’s natural environment and the animals and ecology that make the area unique.
