Description

We are a natural history museum focused on the the natural history and archaeology of Florida and the Caribbean.

Mission

The mission of The Palm Beach Museum of Natural History (PBMNH) is to collect, research, interpret, and explain all aspects of our natural world, the evolution of life, and the development of human cultures. The Museum's primary focus is on, but not limited to, the archaeology and natural history of southern Florida, to include its place within the context of the wider Caribbean region. A key goal of the Museum is the education of the public through the presentation of exhibits, lectures, classes, and hands-on learning experiences.

History

The Museum was formed by a group of paleontologists, archaeologists, science educators, and museum professionals dedicated to the establishment of a premier regional center for the study and public presentation of the natural history and archaeology of Florida and the Caribbean.

Artifact Collections

We are the custodians of the South Florida Archeological Collection. The collection consists of over 900 boxes of archaeological material excavated from 1959 through the present. This collection is of major importance in the study of the areas Pre-Contact Native Americans of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

Research Collections

Our current research is focused on the rise of the Ais people as a regional power along the central east coast of Florida during both the Pre and post-contact periods. Their story is part of the larger history of the Atlantic's rising trade patterns, and the struggle that existed between the Spanish, English, French, and other Europeans to dominate and exploit the resources of the New World.

Educational Programs

We host monthly guest lectures and participate in hand-on archaeological workshops. We currently offer guided tours and have two exhibits on display, Expidition Ice age and Cherylll the Triceratops.
