Description

The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) is the United States Army's preeminent museum and research complex. We are dedicated to educating and preserving the legacy of the men and women who have served their nation as Soldiers.

The USAHEC is an expansive facility with resources for Soldiers, researchers, and museum visitors. Parking and admission to the research facility, the museum, and all events are free. Researchers and the general public have access to the USAHEC's expansive library and archives; visitors to the USAHEC should start at the Information Desk at the Visitor and Education Center (VEC), which serves as the central welcome and orientation site.

The Army Heritage Trail

The Army Heritage Trail serves as the USAHEC's outdoor museum. It encompasses the grounds of the USAHEC, covering about one mile and highlights nearly every era of Army history with different exhibits and large artifacts. Designed to provide an immersion experience that allows the visitor to walk into each period represented, the Trail also serves as a stage for living history presentations by historians serving as interpreters.

Fourteen individual exhibits include full scale reconstructions of a French and Indian War way station, Redoubt Number 10 from the Revolutionary War siege of Yorktown, a section of the Antietam battlefield, a Civil War winter encampment with cabins, a WWI trench system, a WWII company area, a replicated Normandy Bocage scene from World War II, a Current Operations HESCO Bastion barrier checkpoint, and an interpretation of the Vietnam helicopter air assault at Ia Drang that includes a period Fire Support Base. Additionally, there are numerous smaller exhibits featuring armor, aircraft, and artillery from several different eras of U.S. Army history

Mission

The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) team makes historical materials available for use to support the U.S. Army, educate an international audience, and honor Soldiers - past and present.

Artifact Collections

The U.S. Army Heritage Museum (AHM) supports the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center by acquiring, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting the artifacts of the U.S. Army. Through exhibits, research, and interpretation, the AHM educates America's Soldiers and public about the history of the United States Army. The AHM's three primary goals are to collect the Army's historical materials, preserve and process those materials, and provide access to the U.S. Army and the public. There are thousands of artifacts within the USAHEC collection, and they are displayed in various rotating exhibits throughout the building.

Research Collections

The U.S. Army Military History Institute (USAMHI) manages the USAHEC's library, archive, and research facility, covering military history and strategic studies for the U.S. Army. Since its formation in 1967, the USAMHI has collected, preserved, and made available documents pertaining to not only the U.S. Army, but also the Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, reserve components, and foreign militaries. The USAMHI holdings cover the U.S. Army's history from before its formation to current operations, offering unparalleled resources on the evolution of the military art.

Educational Programs

One of the USAHEC's primary missions is to reach out to the U.S. Army and the American public by offering exciting historical and educational programs. Our programs include lecture series, workshops, primary and secondary school programs, historical demonstrations, and several annual and special living history events.
