Sapulpa Historical Museum
Sapulpa, Oklahoma
Description

Sapulpa, Oklahoma is named for a full-blooded Creek Indian who came to Indian Territory after the Indian Removal Act was passed. Our history is based on our Native Americans, The Glenn Pool Oil Boom, glass factories, Frankoma pottery and the enterprising people who settled here around 1900 and thereafter.

History

Sapulpa Historical Society was founded in 1968 by three people who saw a need to preserve our town's history. We own a three-story building that is filled with exhibits, as well as an annex building which houses our antique automobiles, workshop, and storage.

Artifact Collections

Native American, railroad, turn-of-the century evry-day items and clothing. Misc. local history items

Research Collections

We have limited resources available for research. We do have Sapulpa city directories from 1906 to date, old telephone directories, family collections.

Programs

We require docents to conduct tours of our building. Last year we initiated a summer children's program to introduce them to Sapulpa's history. We had guest speakers, including a Yuchi Indian lady, who spoke on their culture, and a great grandson of our town's namesake, Chief Sapulpa, who spoke about his Creek Indian heritage.

Tours

A full tour of our museum takes approximately one hour, and we have docents who will show you through.

We have created a small village to showcase some of Sapulpa 's early businesses. Included are an early-day blacksmith shop, a sheriff's office, the John F. Egan General Merchandise Store, Rock Creek Indian Methodist Church, Euchee Mission Boarding School , and a diorama of the Frisco Railroad shops that were located here in the early 1900s.
