Description

This home is very unique in Oklahoma history. It belonged to the captain of the light horse that was the only law enforcement in the Choctaw Nation during Indian Territory times. The home was built in 1894 and the home was turned over to the historical society in 1967. The Society has restored the home and furnishings of the late 1800s. The "Friends of Peter Conser Historic Site Society has taken on the project to restore the barn during 2006. This will be completed for the Oklahoma Centennial in 2007. Other projects for the future will be a building to use as an exhibit hall for arts & cultural events, a blacksmith area to demonstrate the job as done in Peter Conser's time, a general store that was active on the site in the 1800s to be used as a gift shop and local art & crafts sales venue. The old smokehouse is still standing and will be used to display how a smokehouse was used by the family. A modern technology powered theater will be built in the exhibit hall to provide information for visitors about the "Life & Times of Peter Conser" as well as information about the Choctaw Nation. This story will depict the removal of the Choctaw Nation from the original home lands to Oklahoma and to their present strength in building a strong base for citizens of the Choctaw Nation.

History

Peter Conser died in 1934 but his home remained in the Conser family. In 1967 Mrs. Lewis Barnes, a granddaughter of Peter Conser, and her husband, donated the house to the Oklahoma Historical Society. The Society has renovated the house, returning it to its appearance in the Indian Territory period. The interior of the home has been furnished with items reflective of the Conser family's wealth, social position, and the period.
