Description

The Tweed Museum of Art houses a permanent collection of over 7000 objects that represent a wide range of cultures and histories. The Tweed also hosts special exhibits that showcase artists of national and international significance.

History

The Tweed Gallery 1950 --The Tweed Museum of Art today
The Tweed Museum of Art is located on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth, and is one of five units within the UMD School of Fine Arts.
The "Tweed Art Gallery" first opened to the public in 1950 in what had been the family home of George Peter Tweed, a successful Duluth businessman and a collector of European and American art.
After Mr. Tweed's death in 1946, his wife, Alice (later remarried Dr. Edward L. Tuohy) donated this important art collection from 1950 - 1973 to the University of Minnesota Duluth.
In 1958, 1965 and 1978, funds were donated by Alice Tweed Tuohy, her daughter Bernice Brickson, and the Alice Tweed Tuohy Foundation to build and expand the museum facility on campus. With an endowment gift from Jonathan, Milton and Simon Sax, the museum was again expanded in 1988.
Today, the Tweed Museum of Art encompasses 32,000 square feet with nearly 15,000 square feet of exhibition space in nine galleries, housing a collection of over 7,000 artworks from the 15th century to the present.
An impressive and ongoing program of exhibitions, publications and educational opportunities, has fulfilled Alice Tweed Tuohy's wish that the Tweed Museum of Art become "an educational and cultural resource for the university, the surrounding region, and the nation."
