Description

The Harbor History Museum is a vibrant, hands-on interactive cultural and community center. Our goal is to educate and entertain our guests through a wide variety of exhibits and public programs. The museum features a permanent exhibit on the history of the Gig Harbor Peninsula, a changing exhibition gallery, a resource room, a restored 1893 one-room schoolhouse, a 65-foot commercial fishing boat, and public programs. Primary areas of collection and interpretation are commercial fishing, boat building, maritime transportation, and community and domestic life.

Mission

Our mission is to create opportunities to experience the history of the Gig Harbor Peninsula. We do this by collecting, preserving and sharing this area's history. Our vision is to be the cornerstone providing a sense of identity for our community.

History

The historical society was founded in 1963 with the museum opening ten years later. In 2010, the new Harbor History Museum opened in its permanent facility located on the beautiful and historic Gig Harbor waterfront. The 11,000 square foot facility provides fun and educational exhibits and hands-on interactives that showcase the unique history of our area.

Artifact Collections

Various objects, documents, and photographs relating to the history of the Gig Harbor Peninsula. The museum's collection room holds more than 15,000 items.

Research Collections

General history, Washington state history, peninsula history, maritime history

Educational Programs

The 1893 one-room Midway Schoolhouse was relocated to the Harbor History Museum site to restore and preserve. In late winter 2011, the museum began its Pioneer School Experience, providing local students a half-day pioneer school experience in the schoolhouse, with schoolmarm, slates, McGuffy Readers, and verbal and written exercises. The experience aligns with the Washington State academic requirements for 3rd through 5th grades.
