Description

CWB is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving maritime heritage for future generations. We believe that it is essential to preserve the skills and stories associated with wooden small craft by teaching workshops, organizing events and regattas, and igniting a passion for wood and water in young and old alike. We thrive because of the support of a dedicated group of volunteers, members, and staff who believe that our mission is important. We also stay afloat with the help of generous donors and other supporters of The Center for Wooden Boats.

Mission

To provide a gathering place where maritime history comes alive through direct experience and our small craft heritage is enjoyed, preserved, and passed along to future generations.

History

Founded in 1976, The Center for Wooden Boats has grown from the back porch of the founder's houseboat located on Seattle's Lake Union to become one of the city's top ten museums and a true Seattle icon.

Artifact Collections

Permanent collection. Watercraft: 180 small craft, including rowboats, sailboats, and paddle boats, 26 boat models and half hulls, 18 pond boats. Library: 120 boat plans, 450 volumes, 53 oral histories, 500 photos, 30 cubic feet institutional archives. Maritime objects: 120 related artifacts. Historic Structures: 2 floating houseboats.

Educational Programs

CWB provides over 90 programs each year to youth, adults and families. 2,000 students attend educational field trips and another 2,000 youth engage in other outreach programs. An internship program supports students from the University of Washington in a variety of disciplines and interns from boatbuilding schools.
