Description

The Suquamish Museum is in the heart of Suquamish Village on the Port Madison Indian Reservation located on the breathtaking Kitsap Peninsula, named after Suquamish Chief Kitsap. The county boasts over 250 miles of saltwater shoreline, miles and miles of hiking and biking trails and many vibrant communities. At the corner of Suquamish Way & Division Streets, the new Suquamish Museum facility designed by Mithun Architects (Seattle) has a natural and environmental footprint. LEED design certification, indigeneous landscaping, site water managment, and conscious use of natural materials throughout honor the Suquamish culture and traditions.

From the moment you walk between the welcoming House Posts, the path through the exhibit will engage your senses. Movement, textures, the forest environment and the symbolic movement of the tide will inspire your imagination. The objects owned by the Suquamish Museum, many never before exhibited, and those on loan from Suquamish families and other museums, will engage visitors to learn about the lives and culture of the Suquamish.

Ancient Shores - Changing Tides

The Suquamish Museum Board of Directors and the Museum's curatorial staff collaborated with Storyline Studios (Seattle) to design Ancient Shores – Changing Tides. The exhibit presents the story of the Suquamish People in a traditional way. Seven symbolic design elements illustrate an integrated cultural view of the Suquamish tribe over time; past, present, and future. The exhibit installation by Pacific Studios (Seattle) inspires visitors to see, listen and learn in a different way. The goal is to displace the modern way of historical contextual understanding. Culture is more than historical events strung together. The passing of knowledge and values, generation to generation, is the core of Suquamish culture.

Services
In Our Store

Shopping in the Leota Anthony Museum Store will complete any visit to the new museum. We have assembled an impressive array of merchandise celebrating Coast Salish design influence. We seek out and order products from Native owned companies or companies who responsibly deal with and compensate Native and Canadian First Nations Artists. Even though what we offer is manufactured all over the world when it reaches your home you can be assured that the essence of design is an authentic expression of Indian Country.

Pendleton: Signature Pendleton blankets, purses and more are available in the Leota Anthony Museum Store. Special Orders can be placed through the Store for individuals, businesses, or Suquamish Government departments. Come in and view the latest Pendleton Catalogs or call with a request. Be aware that Pendleton Woolen Mill blankets are all limited quantities because of the manufacturing process. The Mill produces a limited number of blankets of any design each year. Some years they may choose to not produce a design at all. Because of this it is best to give us as much time as possible to communicate with the Pendleton Sales Office to discover if what you request is available. If unavailable we will find out what currently is in stock and share those options with you.

Public Group Guided Tours

Visit the Suquamish Museum as a group and take advantage of Special Rates and an enhanced learning opportunity! $3 per person plus a Guide Fee of $20 for up to 40 people. The Guided tour for the Ancient Shores ~ Changing Tides exhibit about the history and culture of the Suquamish People is designed to be 45 to 60 minutes in length depending on questions. Upon request, groups larger than 40 or groups that need less than 60 minutes may choose a 10 minute exhibit introduction by the Tour Guide who would then remain in the space available for questions from group members for the duration of the visit.
