This Center for the Arts opened in 1977 in the 1910 WaterWorks basins that previously produced Miles City's drinking water for over 60 years. It's located just west of Miles City, Montana on the banks of the Yellowstone River in an area that was part of the 1876 Fort Keogh Reservation. Previously, it was a common camping ground site used for centuries by the first Americans. Guided by a philosophy of public service in the arts and cultural interests, this non-profit center produces a year-round calendar of changing exhibits, workshops, classes and humanities programs.
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this converted industrial facility with its craftsman styled Pump House, earned a Montana Governor's Historic Preservation Award for the best adaptive re-use of a historic structure and also for excellence in the Arts.
The Center has two large, elegant galleries featuring regional and national changing exhibitions as well as those drawn from our permanent collection. Selected artists represent a wide variety of mediums and styles in solo, group and theme exhibitions. Regular annual exhibits include the Southeastern Montana Juried Competition, the invitational Art Auction Exhibit and the Western Art Roundup showcasing traditional and contemporary western artists. Quilts, Miniatures and student shows are among other regular exhibits.
The Center's educational programs are comprised of adult classes, kids classes and an educational outreach program that stretches across Southeastern Montana.
As a cultural leader in southeastern Montana, the Center is a nonprofit organization guided by a philosophy of public service. Our mission is to provide, free of charge, high quality, interpretative exhibits in the visual arts and humanities; educational opportunities and informational services for the general public, schools and civic groups; and proper management of and accessibility to exhibited visual artworks, including the Center's permanent collection, held in public trust.
