Established in 1865, the Montana Historical Society is one of the oldest institutions of its kind west of the Mississippi River. The Montana Historical Society Museum, Montana's Museum, collects, preserves, and interprets fine art, historical, archaeological, and ethnological artifacts that pertain to Montana and its adjoining geographic region. Montana's Museum is where history and land come together in the story of the people who have called Montana home. Located near the State Capitol in Helena, the museum is an essential part of a meaningful travel experience in Montana.

You can enjoy Montana's rich history in your own home with a subscription to the Society's award-winning journal, Montana The Magazine of Western History. And when you join the Society as a member, you'll receive the magazine, along with free admission to Montana's Museum, discounts on store purchases, and many other membership perks.

Plan your next business meeting, after-hours event, or private gathering at the Montana Historical Society.

If you haven't been to the Montana Historical Society, you will find a true gem in expeeriencing and understanding the West. We are the oldest such institution west of the Mississippi River founded in 1865. We were among the first museums in the nation accredited by the American Association of Museums, and our exhibits and artwork are world-class. Charlie Russell not only was a better painter than Remington, he also was a real Montana cowboy before he went to lighter pursuits!! We have the best gallery of his work anywhere including his masterpiece "When the Land Belonged to God." On our website you will find "the Western Rendezvous of Art" that brings art lovers and the best artists in the nation together in Montana every summer. We take our history here as seriously as we do our fun!!!! Come see us, we'll be waiting.
