Gates House ca. 1810; fully furnished home plus marine room with research material artifacts and ship's models, genealogy library, local history.

Cooper House ca.1850 has tool collections,decoys, 1800 school house and old post office for hands on inspection.

Mission

To preserve and share the history of the people of Machiasport and educate the present generation about their way of life in the 1800's.

History

The newly formed Machiasport Historical Society obtained the Gates House, built by Nathaniel Gates in 1810 from the town in 1965. They have worked diligently to maintain it and the Cooper House,filling them with historical collections significant to every aspect of area history.

Artifact Collections

Marine history: models ships logs,artifacts. Local history and artifacts many original documents. Extensive tool collection for region, decoys. Artifacts from daily living, clothing, quil\ts etc.

Research Collections

Genealogy and history library.Original daybooks of local shop keepers,etc. No computer or internet access.

Educational Programs

School,scout groups, college classes, homeschoolers and other groups welcome. Demonstrations of tools, hands on experience in post office and school room. Tours geared to level or interest available.

Facilities

One small bathroom. Tables availabel down stairs for group picnic lunches.
