Woodlawn is a 180-acre historic estate located a quarter mile from downtown Ellsworth, Maine. Once home to three generations of the Black family, it is now treasured for the Black House, its historic house museum, community and formal gardens, and its public park with walking trails. Visitors can explore a superb historic house, stroll through beautiful gardens, play croquet, hike on pristine trails, and much more.
The main house is open for tours May 1 - October 31 and December 1-23. The public park is open year round, sunrise to sunset.
Under the governance of the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations, Woodlawn offers the people of Hancock County and beyond opportunities for recreation and education on a preserved historic estate, and provides connections to the region's cultural heritage through programs that arouse curiosity and entertain.
The Black House at Woodlawn was built between 1824 and 1827 by John and Mary Black. Their grandson, George Nixon Black, Jr. gave the estate to the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations upon his death in 1928 to be kept always for public use and the house as a museum honoring his family.
The Woodlawn School Program- programs for area student offered free of charge.
