The interest in our culture by adults and youth as well, has been exceptional. Therefore, we are faced with a real need to expand due to our efforts to involve the community people and especially the youth in all of our programs.
Listed below are several of our sponsored events:
- An Annual Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday Observance
- Black Cowboys from the West, with New York City’s actors, George Tooks and Betty Vaughn
- The Way We Use to Live/Then We Were Colored, a past experience of rural Allendale County
- A cultural event, with Oscar Brown III and Vertamae Grosvenor
- Annual Kwanza Celebration
- College and High School Students’ Day
- Views on African and African American Affairs
- A Taste of Culture 9. Annual Father’s Day Banquet
We have a considerable collection of books, Jet and Ebony magazines, photographs, video tapes, posters, artifacts, paintings and many other items recalling much of the aspects of the African American experiences.
In addition, we are proud to have in our possession, a microfiche machine and films that are used by the citizens of Allendale and surrounding counties to research their family history.
Our immediate plans are to raise money and add an extra room for lecturing and to display the paintings and photographs that were donated to the center.
In September 1989, a committee was formed and a letter was written to Dr. Dill Gamble, Jr., Superintendent of Allendale County Schools, requesting that the school district sell the committee a one room historical building. This one room building was once used as a classroom at the former Allendale County Training School in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. It was later used as a band room.
The building was sold to the committee for $1.00. Funds were raised by people in the community to have the building transferred from the Allendale Fairfax Middle School to its present location at the end of East Flat Street.
The purpose of the organization is to provide educational, cultural and social experiences as well as activities related to African American Heritage. It has been incorporated as the Allendale African American Cultural Center and is now ready to undertake its objective of focusing on the study of African American History. As we pursue this objective, there will be special programs and/or presentations made available to the general public on African American culture.
