Description

The Colleton Museum is a local natural and cultural history museum. At the moment we are crammed into a small space with few personel and even fewer opportunities to properly interpret the artifacts in our care. We would like to see the museum inhabit a larger space with properly curated exhibits that capture the unique history of the Colleton County Lowcountry of South Carolina.

Colleton Farmers Market

Offering fresh vegetables and fruits, local honey, local crafts, plants, baked goods, prepared food, music, and much more, the Colleton Farmers Market is open from May through October on Tuesdays from Noon until 6 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am until 2 pm. In November and December the Market is only open on Saturdays

History

The Colleton Museum began as the dream of the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society. It was opened in 1988 with the dedication of its current home, the Old Jail circa 1856. The current director has been in place for 10 years and has been fundamental in establishing the museum and its mission in Colleton County.

Artifact Collections

The Colleton Museum accepts donations of artifacts relevant to the history of Colleton County. Currently this includes a small collection of prehistoric fossils and Native American artifacts, artifcts from an early colonial settlement, artifacts relating to the Civil War and World Wars I & II, 19th & 20th century clothing, tools and household artifacts.

Research Collections

The Colleton Museum has a small research collection primarily for staff use. We are more than willing to assist in outside research requests as our time and resources allow.

Educational Programs

Guided Tours of the museum are offered if staff is available. Our education programs consist of outreach programs to area public, private and home schools and are mainly oriented towards environmental education. We offer the ACE Basin Traveling Trunk, the Wonderful Wetlands Traveling Trunk, as well as up to 15 environmental education kits, videos, books and other resources FREE to area educators. Educators may also participate in our Teacher's Envirnmental Network which lets them explore local science resoureces through lectures and field trips. Contact the Education Director at 843-5493265 for more details. Special Educational Tours available on demand for school groups.

Publications

A newsletter, Notes from the Old Jail, is available at least twice a year.
