Description

The Pioneer Craft House, named for a project commemorating the 1847 settlement of Salt Lake City, celebrated its 60th year at the old Scott School property at 500 E 3300 S. During that time, Craft House has been the home of a valuable international puppet collection, well-used weaving and pottery studios, silversmith and lapidary workshops, an art library, and a peaceful cultural haven for artists and craftspeople. Classes in both heritage and contemporary methods and materials gave students the opportunity to develop interests in fields as varied as tatting, woodcarving, sculpture, flute-making, and even microwave cooking and macrame!

Pioneer Craft House has no collections, no hours, no director, and so forth. Rather it is a school for art and crafts.

Items for sale in The Gift gallery represent work done by our instructors, students, and refugee students. Gift Gallery hours are Saturdays, 10am to 3pm. Call for information about space rental for arts and non-profit groups. Group tours of classrooms by appointment.

Efforts continue on the part of impassioned artists, educators, and community builders to ensure that Craft House's serene campus and spacious studios remain a cultural oasis for decades to come. This renewed dedication to arts and crafts education means that our sanctuary of learning, the oldest continually operated school in Utah, will carry on for generations.

Mission

The mission of Pioneer Craft House is to respond to the community by offering vital cultural resources and high standards of art and crafts education, programs, and events. Pioneer Craft House will preserve and honor the rich heritage of its collections, artifacts, and exhibits.
