Mission

To preserve the history of the people of Millard County through educational activities, and preservation of historical information and artifacts.

History

In 1851, newly-appointed Governor Brigham Young and a delegation of lawmakers selected a site for the capitol of the Utah Territory. The new capitol city and county were named in honor of President Millard Fillmore. Construction on the south wing of the Statehouse began in 1852. Original plans called for three levels and four wings, connected by a Moorish dome at the center. Today's red sandstone building is the south wing of the proposted structure, whish was never fully constructed. The December 1855 legislature was the only full session held in the Statehouse, and in 1858, the seat of government was returned to Salt Lake.

Artifact Collections

Artifact collections at Territorial Statehouse reflect the stories of Utah's Mormon pioneer past. Furniture, textiles, ceramics, tools and a large collection of photgraphs of Millard County pioneers are exhibited throughout the site.

Research Collections

Copies of old photographs and biographical sketches of many original settlers are available. Call for pricing. Also available in our library are family and local histories of the area.

Educational Programs

We can do school groups, adult tours, and also have Youth camps in the summer months where teens can experience pioneer skill and activities. We also do an overnight scout camp for Boys Scouts and their leaders to receive the "Citizenship in The Nation" Merit Badge.
