Description

The Old Dillard Museum is a historic cultural education center for preserving and promoting the customs, rhythms, symbols and traditions that have been the foundation of African-American survival and success in Fort Lauderdale and the nation.

Mission

To promote awareness and understanding as a unique educational resource. To maintain the historical integrity of the building and contents of the Old Dillard Museum. To create and implement educational programs that emphasize the artistic, cultural and historic legacy of people of African descent. To expand the permanent collection. In expansion of that effort to create replicable models and partnerships on a regional, national and international basis.

History

The Old Dillard Museum is a historic cultural education center for preserving and promoting the customs, rhythms, symbols and traditions that have been the foundation of African-American survival and success in Fort Lauderdale and the nation.

Artifact Collections

Donations from local families includes photographs, documents, books, historic school furniture and fixtures.

Research Collections

Research collection includes photographs, documents, oral histories, and local artifacts.

Educational Programs

Educations programs include exhibitions, gallery tours, workshops, lectures, jazz concerts, spoken word, book discussion groups, cultural catalogs, monograpaphs, oral history interviews and meeting space for history related groups.

Governance

The Old Dillard Museum is a historical landmark and an education center operated by the Broward Public School System. Funding for the museum's activities is provided in part by the Old Dillard Foundation, Funding Arts Broward, The Links, Inc., the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council and other gracious supporters.
