Description

The St. Lucie County Regional History Center is dedicated to the collection, preservation and promotion of St. Lucie County and the surrounding region's unique history. The permanent exhibit area takes visitors on a chronological journey through different time periods of the area's past. Included are exhibits dealing with the ancient Ais tribe; the Golden Galleons exhibit which features artifacts from the wreck of the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet; an early Seminole encampment and displays featuring the history of the Seminole Wars, the beginnings of Fort Pierce and early settler life. Guided tours of the 1908 Register-Gardner House provide visitors with a glimpse at Florida's pioneer past. A special exhibit gallery offers changing special exhibitions every 6 months. The Justin Havee research library holds the archives of the Center as well as hundreds of primary and secondary source material dealing with Treasure Coast history. The Center is also the owner of the Hill Photography collection, containing over 1,400 images of early life along the Indian River from the 1890s and onward. The research library is open to the public, students and researchers by appointment. Special events, living history demonstrations, lecture series, tours, outreach programs, summer camps, traveling educational trunks and history tutoring are just a few of the public programs this museum has to offer.
