Description

We have purchased the Masonic Temple at 212 1/2 E. Main St. in Washington for our new museum, and are turning it into a proper museum. Board meetings are held the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the new museum.

We have a rare exhibit of funeral practices that outlines the history since 1776 to now. We hold a rare slave collar from 1855, a Lew Wallace letter from 1898 and a military history room and a local artist art gallery room.

The Daviess County Museum is dedicated to the preservation of the nearly 200-year history of Daviess County, IN. We have a display room with numerous exhibits, an archives room with genealogies and other research tools, and a gift shop.

Mission

The Daviess County Historical Society is dedicated to the collection, preservation, research, organization, exhibition, and/or acquisition of artifacts, documents, sites, and other historical relics, regardless of medium, which are significant to the history of Daviess County, and thereby educate by promoting the historical study of said county, and strive to describe, or illustrate, the social, political, industrial, and educational progress of Daviess County Indiana.

History

The DCHS Museum is in its third location in Washington since the inception of the Society in 1966. The Society was reorganized in 2004 with generous County Government support and support of the Innkeepers Tax. We have one paid staff member and numerous volunteers. We do genealogy research for a fee.

Artifact Collections

We have artifacts dating back to the War of 1812 era and Indian artifacts dating to before Christ. We have a large Civil War display area, a school room, an archives room, a military history room and an art gallery as well as the funeral exhibit room mentioned earlier.

Research Collections

We hold genealogy records of many families, 1850 census, land records, school records, church reocrds, oral histories and scrapbook records, newspaper records, marriage and cemetery records.

Educational Programs

We work with area schools to provide educational tours to students, in particular the fourth grade in Indiana. We participate with Historic Southern Indiana in organizing teacher workshops and lectures. We have a guide to the Museum available that outlines our holdings.
