Description

The small but highly regarded museum includes several buildings, containing exhibits about local and regional, pre-settlement, Oregon Trail and settlement era history.

Mission

The Union County Museum Society collects, preserves, studies, and exhibits artifacts to illustrate the story of humans and their environment in Union County, Oregon.

History

Established in the 1970s, the Union County Museum is an all volunteer-run museum, funded by membership fees, admission fees, gift shop sales, and donations. Grants have helped fund specific projects and numerous exhibits, expansions, and facility upgrades. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and welcome tax deductible gifts and memberships.

Artifact Collections

Collections include the Cowboys Then & Now Collection, The Livery Station, Pioneer Cabin, General Store, the Nature Room, Native American History, and much more. One building focuses on Agriculture, Transportation & Timber, and the businesses that served those industries.

Research Collections

A large photo archive (most are digitized), collection of high school annuals, newspapers, and an extensive library make the museum popular with people exploring their family history in Union County, Oregon.

Educational Programs

The Traveling Trunk is an educational presentation, created by former teachers and adapted to the age level of the groups to which it is presented, off-site.

Facilities

A brick historic bank building houses a large portion of the exhibits. An attached former grocery store and one-time roller skating rink houses the Cowboys Then & Now Collection and General Store and storage area and archives. The A T & T building is a u-shaped single story building with a courtyard. It contains the Livery Station and Blacksmith Shop on one wing, along with a space for rotating and guest exhibits. The other wing houses the AT & T exhibits, Forest Service Fire Lookout, Post office and trade exhibits. An early city firetruck is also housed in this wing. A restored historic white church across the street from the museum is owned by the UCM Society and is a venue for museum events and is available for rent for weddings, reunions and craft shows. It has a small stage for entertainment and lectures.
