The history of the original Old Colony is one that reaches from Rehoboth to Provincetown, and from Scituate to Dartmouth. It’s as distant as 1639 and as relevant as a moment ago. It is a history that plays like a page-turner, replete with epic battles, brash entrepreneurs, new-for-the-time technologies – and the stuff of everyday life. Things that happened in the Old Colony made the region what it is today and frequently influenced events worldwide.
At the Old Colony History Museum, we’re proud to be the keeper of this history. It is our ongoing mission to be able to bring it to life for the region’s families and children as well as historians of every age. Open year-round, we curate exhibits and offer tours, lectures, workshops, field trips and special presentations for school groups. We invite you to join us, to personally experience our collective past in a way unique to our region.
The Old Colony History Museum is located on historic Church Green in Taunton. The Museum has its headquarters in the former Bristol Academy, designed in 1852 by the New York architect Richard Upjohn. The Museum’s parent organization is the Old Colony Historical Society, one of the oldest organizations of its kind in New England. Founded in 1853, it serves the region of southeastern Massachusetts that was once part of the Plymouth Colony.

The OCHM hosts teacher workshops, daily guided tours at 12 noon, and field trips for 2nd, 4th, and 7th grade classes.
We have first-floor gallery that hosts lectures, public programs, and our temporary exhibit space. The second floor (accessible by a staircase) contains three exhibit rooms and the bulk of the exhibits on display. Also on the second floor is a research library from genealogy and local history research.
Lecture Halls
The Museum is governed by an 18-person board of directors.
The library and archives contain major genealogical holdings as well as local history material, newspapers, maps, and images. We specialize in research materials pertaining to Southeastern Massachusetts prior to 1850, with special concentration on Taunton’s early European settlers. The library is open daily for on-site research.
