Mission

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) is a private, non-profit, educational resource for Colorado. The mission of the museum is to enrich the lives of Colorado and Rocky Mountain residents through the acquisition, preservation, and presentation of art works in both the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, and by supporting these works with exemplary educational and scholarly programs.

History

History/Background
Founded in 1893, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) is the largest art museum between Kansas City and the West Coast, with over 60,000 works of art in eight curatorial departments. The strength of the DAM's collection is in the Art of the Americas--encompassing pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial art as well as an internationally acclaimed American Indian collection.

The DAM has been recognized nationally and internationally for its interactive and family-friendly activities. The museum offers a variety of innovative and interactive programs, including the Just For Fun Family Center, Family Backpacks, the Kids Corner, Eye Spy gallery games and the Discovery Library.

Architect Gio Ponti of Italy designed the Denver Art Museum's North Building, which opened in 1971--a work of art in itself. The exterior of the 28-sided, two-towered building is covered with more than one million faceted, shimmering gray tiles developed by Dow Corning.

The Frederic C. Hamilton Building, designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, opened in 2006. The Hamilton Building consists of geometric shards flaring out like titanium flower petals; an enclosed bridge connects it to the North Building. With permanent gallery spaces, special exhibition venues, Museum Shop and a sculpture garden, the Hamilton Building doubles the Museum's size and is an architectural landmark for Denver and the region.
