Texas Forestry Museum
Lufkin, Texas

History, Historic House, Natural History, Nature Centers, Science

Texas trees are not always viewed as icons of the industrial growth of the state. When people think of the Lone Star State, visions of cattle, cowboys and oil wells usually come to mind. However, in the decade between 1890 and 1900, the timber business of Texas brought more money to the economy of the state than any other industry. The 14 million acres of the East Texas Pineywoods are still an important contributor to the strength of the state. Sawmills, logging railroads, and modern forest management have all influenced East Texas culture. The century-and-a-half story of the forest industries of Texas, the people who shaped them, the legacies they left, and the changes in forest management are the focus of the exhibits and programming at the Texas Forestry Museum.

The Alamo
San Antonio, Texas

History, Historic House

The Alamo began its existence in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, the oldest of San Antonio's five Spanish mission. In 1724, Spanish officials relocated Valero to the spot that the Alamo now occupies. Two original building remain from the mission period (1724-1793)-the church, or modem Shrine, and the convento, or Long Barrack. The mission was desecularized in 1793. Around 1803, a Spanish cavalry unit called the Second Flying Company of San Carlos de Parras, was quartered in the former mission compound and the site began several decades of use by the military, first Spanish followed by Mexican, Texan, United States, Confederate, and then U.S. again. The Alamo is best remembered for the epic battle which occurred in 1836 as one of the key events of the Texas Revolution.

Twentieth Century Technology Museum
Wharton, Texas

Children's, History, Historic House, Library, Science, Specialized

The Museum was founded to exhibit items that showcase the highlights of technological developments in the 20th century. While this may seem too recent a subject for a historical museum, with the rapid pace of technological change, items from the first half of the 20th century are truly "museum pieces" at this point in time. Technology from the latter half of the century may not seem so antiquated, but items from this period help to show how the earlier items relate to current technology. Major items of significance on display include electronic media (radio, television, film, phonographs, etc.) We expect that the collection will grow to encompass more areas of technology as the Museum matures.
