Henricus Foundation/ Henricus Historical Park

This new English settlement would be called “The Commonwealth of Henrico” or “Henricus” in honor of the eldest son of King James I, Prince Henry. The recreated English settlement represents various military, trades, and farming elements of Henricus during the early colonial period from 1611-1622.

A fine arts museum housed in Tudor style home on 13 acres along the Lafayette River. The Hermitage Foundation Museum is truly a celebration of the arts. Some of the works include Italian and French textiles and laces, English and European ceramics and paintings, hand painted glass from Germany, ivory carvings, Persian rugs, and ritual bronzes and ceramic tomb figures from China.

HGI Exchange Hotel Civil War Museum
Gordonsville, Virginia

Before the Civil War, the Exchange Hotel with its high ceiling parlors and grand veranda welcomed passengers from the two rail lines: the Virginia Central Railroad and the Alexandria Railroad. Soon war began. Troops, supplies, and wounded were transported on these railroads to Gordonsville. The Exchange Hotel became the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital which provided care for 70,000 soldiers, both Confederate and Union. In the reconstruction period, this hospital served the newly freed slaves as a freedman's bureau hospital. As the United States healed and the railroads boomed, this graceful building returned to its role of hotel. Now fully restored, the hotel is now a museum dedicated to the Civil War era.

Historic Crab Orchard Museum and Pioneer Park opened in 1982 as a non-profit historical museum named for the National Landmark historic site on which we are located. A comprehensive cultural heritage museum of Middle Appalachia with exhibit galleries, 14 pioneer buildings dating to 1802, and the Red Barn exhibit/events building. The museum features a lively cultural/arts events schedule.

Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop

ca. 1772 This eighteenth-century building was restored to house the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, a museum of medicine, pharmacy, and military and political affairs. Dr. Mercer served the citizens of Fredericksburg with medicines and treatments of the time. Leeches, lancets, snakeroot, and crab claws made up just some of the remedies. Dr. Mercer practiced medicine for fifteen years in Fredericksburg. His patients included Mary Washington. Dr. Mercer left his practice to join the Revolutionary army and died as a Brigadier General at the Battle of Princeton.

Meador, Jr. to whom this museum is dedicated, was a tireless advocate of the coal-mining industry in general, and of the Westmoreland Coal Company in particular.Collections include merchandise, pictures and documents about the coal mining institution in Big Stone Gap; exhibitions focus on mining and the people living in the area during the coal mining boom.

Historic Hanover Tavern

The Tavern is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Hanover Courthouse Historic District. The District includes the Courthouse (1735 and listed separately as a National Landmark), old jail (1830s), clerk's office (early 19th Century), and the tavern. This set of buildings is a rare surviving example of the county governmental complex once common in Virginia.

This 1770s Tidewater Plantation style house stands on its original foundation and is the birthplace of two Virginia Governors. Costumed interpreters give tours of the seven period furnished rooms, a gift shop is also available.

Housewright House Museum, Historic Buckingham

In 1976, Historic Buckingham, Inc. acquired and restored the Housewright House, a Jeffersonian-era brick home on U.S. Route 60 in the village of Buckingham Court House. The Housewright House serves as our headquarters, as well as a museum and a repository for historical books, genealogical records and other resources, such as cemetery surveys and maps.The museum is located in the Village of Buckingham Court House on Rt. 60. It contains exhibits on local history as well as a small genealogy library.
