This 60,000-square-foot facility, built in the heart of one of Broward’s historically black communities, is the third of its kind in the nation to house extensive collections related to this unique blend of cultures. It is the sixth largest branch library of the Broward County Libraries Division, a service of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. The library houses more than 85,000 books, manuscripts, artifacts and documents. In addition to these resources, it features permanent and traveling exhibits, a 300-seat state-of-the-art auditorium and a computer training lab.

Buehler Planetarium and Observatory

Located on the central campus of Broward Community College, the planetarium was built in 1965 through a bequest of aviation pioneer Emil Buehler. Over the past 35 years, the planetarium has presented star shows and astronomical programs to almost a million visitors. As a result of a substantial gift from the Emil Buehler Trust, the planetarium has been completely renovated, reopening in 1988 with a Zeiss M1015 star projector and a sophisticated computerized automation system.

Historic Stranahan House Museum

The Stranahan House was built in 1901 by Frank Stranahan, credited as Fort Lauderdale’s founding father, and his wife Ivy Cromartie Stranahan, the area’s first school teacher. It is the oldest surviving structure in Broward County and has served as a trading post, post office, town hall, and home to the Stranahans. The house is a wood-frame vernacular structure with wide porches and a stunning view of the New River. The Stranahan House has stood at the center of Fort Lauderdale’s growth since it was built and has played a significant role in the economic and social life of this community. Serving as one among 257 air stations during World War II, and as one of a few specialty schools for training on the TBM/TBF Avenger aircraft, the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale (NASFL) made a big impact in the South Florida region, and the United States as a whole. The NAS Fort Lauderdale Museum (also known as the Link Trainer Building #8), stands as the only reminder of a naval complex of more than 200 buildings.

Old Davie School Historical Museum

History

Davie School Foundation was established in 1984 to restore and preserve Old Davie School, the oldest existing school building in Broward County. The school was designed by August Geiger in 1918 as the first permanent school in the Everglades and was used as a school until 1980. Working in partnership with Town of Davie, Soroptimist International of Davie and Davie Historical Society, the Foundation works to collect, preserve and interpret the history and cultural of the Davie Community. Old Davie School was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 29, 1988. The Viele House, c. 1912, and the Walsh-Osterhoudt Home, c. 1914, were relocated to the site in 2003-04 and will open as house museums of pioneer life in later 2007/early 2008.

The story of the New River is as old as the Everglades. It was home to the Tequesta People from prehistoric time. Later is was a refuge for the Seminole People. Even though it was claimed by Ponce De Leon for his King in 1513, it remained virtually untouched by the modern world until the late 1800s. Fort Lauderdale Historical Society operates 3 museums and a research library on the banks of the New River. Its campus features an open-air museum that demonstrates the best remaining examples of wood and masonry vernacular tropical architecture. Its Main, Pioneer House and Schoolhouse Museums explore the development of South Florida from virgin land to the present.

International Swimming Hall of Fame

This not-for-profit educational organization annually honors the world's greatest aquatic heroes and preserves the sport's history in a museum that houses swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo memorabilia, including films, books, interactive video displays and endless archives relating to aquatic sports. A plethora of Olympic memorabilia from over 100 countries includes gold medals won by some of the sport's brightest stars. The training facility contains, a swimming flume, training pool, two Olympic-size swimming pools and diving well used for training by some Olympic competitors.
