Founded in 1973 as Nexus, a grassroots artist’s cooperative, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (ACAC) has become one of the southeast’s leading contemporary art centers. We play a vital role in Atlanta’s cultural landscape by presenting cutting-edge contemporary art reflective of the world around us, offering diverse educational programming for people of all ages, and supporting working artists and their creative process. ACAC presents 8-10 exhibitions per year featuring consequential artists from the local to international art scenes. We are one of the few local institutions that commissions new works by artists. We pay particular attention to artists of note who have not had a significant exhibition in the southeast.

Visitors see an award-winning film about the Southeastern Indians and the Hall of the Ancients depicts 12,000 years of Native American life through artifacts, dioramas, and interactive computer programs. The story of the Trail of Tears is shown in a 4-minute film and maps. Also on display is an extensive collection of contemporary Native American artwork, including paintings, baskets, sculpture and pottery. A unique collection featuring tools from more than 100 crafts is displayed in the Sellars Gallery of Historic Tools. In the Appalachian Settlement, pioneer log cabins, a blacksmith shop and farm buildings tell the story of Georgia's early residents. Adults and children both enjoy our Nature Trail featuring many species of native plants.

The Juliette Low Birthplace is a special treasure of Savannah's National Historic Landmark District--Savannah's only house interpreted for the Victorian period. The Wayne-Gordon House was built between 1818-1821 for Mayor James Moore Wayne, later Supreme Court Justice. The house is restored to a documented 1886 appearance, a year of extensive changes to the house. Guided tours explore the amusing and lively stories of four generations of one American family, the Gordons. Hear firsthand about the fascinating life of their remarkable daughter the Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low. The Aviation Wing of the Marietta Museum of History is presently comprised of a 15.5 acre park. The park features various civilian and military aircraft from the latter half of the twentieth century in addition to aircraft produced locally in Marietta. Aviation in Marietta begins with Bell Aircraft in the early 1940s and continued to grow with Lockheed Martin from the 1950s to present. Aviation has played an integral role in Marietta's history and with aircraft manufacturing continuing to be a prominent industry; the Aviation Wing desires to have visitors explore the complete story of our community. The Aviation Wing will officially open to the public the first of the New Year 2011.

The Global Health Odyssey Museum (GHO) is an educational facility designed to teach about CDC, public health, and the benefits of prevention. Located in Building 2 in the former CDC cafeteria, the original Global Health Odyssey presented permanent exhibitions about the history and work of CDC through dioramas, an interactive timeline, and displays of artifacts and objects. In 2000 as part of its master plan, CDC made the decision to expand GHO to the new Global Communications Center that was scheduled for completion in 2005. Planning for new exhibition, education, and support areas provided opportunities for the GHO staff to professionalize its operations to meet the highest museum standards, including collections management, education, and outreach.

Currahee Military Museum is an incredible tribute to the WWII paratroopers that trained at Camp Toccoa at Currahee. Members of the 101st, 11th and 17th Airborne, they set the mark high while training to be some of the most physically fit men in the Army. One of our featured exhibits is a restored horse stable 75 feet lone, that was used as housing in Aldbourne, England before and after D-Day 1944.

The Girl Scout First Headquarters was built in 1848 as the carriage house to the Andrew Low House. Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts, converted the carriage house into the Girl Scout Headquarters shortly after she founded Girl Scouting in March of 1912 in Savannah, Georgia. It was willed to the Girl Scout Council of Savannah upon her death in 1927.

The museum includes a year-round exhibit that includes “examples of fine marble and shows the history of marble mining in Pickens County. Many stone cutters and other workers who migrated from either Italy or Scotland in the early years of the industry settled in Nelson to work in the area’s marble industry. Today the Great Northern Railroad operates between Tate, Georgia, and the CSX interchange at Elizabeth (Marietta) five days a week. The Georgia Marble rail lines at Tate and Marble Hill, and the Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad at Blue Ridge, Georgia are also operated by GNRR.
